Discount code and voucher sites are all the rage. Retailers love them because they get customers through the electronic door. Shoppers love them because, well, we all love a deal. Building an online discount code isn’t hard. In fact, it’s one of the simplest things you can do. Let’s start by giving you a rundown on what you’ll need to build a profitable website that serves vouchers to hungry consumers.
Domain name – the name of your website. There’s a lot of argument over the merits of having a keyword in your domain name. Some say it helps, others say not. Personally, I try to get at least part of the keyword, i.e. vouchers, into my URL but if that’s not possible I’ll choose a name that’s brandable (ready for when you sell your site for a few billion!)
Web hosting –
web hosting. Don’t scrimp on this area. Choose a hosting company that provides plenty of disk space and bandwidth. You wouldn’t want to see the dreaded ‘Bandwidth Exceeded’ message just as the shopper is about to buy, would you? If you can afford it, go for a dedicated or virtual private server.
CMS – content management systems are probably the simple and most efficient ways to build a web directory. Take a look at Joomla, Drupal or even WordPress. You’ll probably need a custom skin so if you can’t code look for a reputable developer on places such as ScriptLance.
The codes – the easy bit. Sign up to an affiliate network. These are the biggest source of discount codes on the web and each code comes with an affiliate link that is bound to your account and will earn you commission for every sale made through your site.
A plan – you thought you got away with that one, didn’t you. Plans, plans, plans; you do need them. Competition can be incredibly fierce in the voucher code market. You need to know exactly what you’re letting yourself in for, the phrases you want to target and places to get links.
